Muay Thai Kickboxing in Laurel, MD
This Is Where You Learn to Strike. From the Ground Up.
Muay Thai is one of the most complete striking arts in the world. At 2nd Gear, it is also one of the most beginner-friendly things you can walk into with zero experience.
Structured classes. Real technique. A coaching staff that teaches adults how to move, strike, and improve from their very first session.
- No experience needed
- Coached from day one
- First week is free
Most People Who Start Here Have Never Thrown a Punch in a Class Before.
That is not an exaggeration. It is just what the room looks like.
If you have been thinking about Muay Thai but something has been stopping you, it is probably one of these:
You are not sure you are fit enough to keep up. You are not sure what to expect when you walk in. You are not sure if it is worth the time commitment before you even know if you like it.
All of that is normal. None of it should stop you.
The adults who train at 2nd Gear are not here because they were ready. They are here because they decided to find out.
What Makes Training at 2nd Gear Different
You know what you are working on every single class. There is no showing up and figuring it out as you go. Every class has a clear structure. Warm up, technique, application, conditioning. You leave knowing exactly what you worked on and why it matters.
The coaching is built around people who are new. This is not a gym where beginners are expected to keep pace with advanced students while coaches focus their attention elsewhere. At 2nd Gear, new students get coached. That is the standard from day one.
You build actual striking skill. Muay Thai is a technical art. Punches, kicks, elbows, knees, clinch work, timing, footwork. The program at 2nd Gear teaches all of it in a sequence that makes sense. You are not just getting a workout. You are learning something.
The room has no ego in it. The culture here is built intentionally. People help each other. Coaches take the time. Nobody walks in on their first day and feels like they do not belong.
What a Muay Thai Class at 2nd Gear Actually Looks Like
A lot of people spend more time wondering what the first class will feel like than it actually takes to go through it.
Here is exactly what happens.
Warm Up You move your body, loosen up, and get your mind into the room. Nothing complicated. The warm up is designed to prepare you for what comes next.
Technique The coach breaks down a specific technique. You learn the mechanics, the positioning, and how it is supposed to feel before you ever try to apply it with speed or power. Beginners and experienced students work through the same material at their own level.
Pad Work and Partner Drills You apply what you just learned with a partner. This is where Muay Thai starts to feel like itself. The pads give you real feedback and real timing in a controlled setting.
Conditioning The end of class finishes with conditioning work built into the training. You get fit through the work itself, not through separate exercises disconnected from the art.
You are not expected to be sharp on day one. You are expected to pay attention and put in the effort. Everything else is built over time.

The Things That Stop People From Starting. Answered Honestly.
“I need to get in shape before I start.” This is the most common one. It is also the one that keeps people waiting the longest for no reason. Muay Thai is what gets you in shape. You do not need to arrive ready. You just need to arrive.
“I have never done anything like this before.” Good. Neither had most of the people in the room when they started. The program at 2nd Gear is built from the ground up for people with no background in striking or martial arts. You are not behind. You are exactly where you are supposed to be.
“I am going to look like I have no idea what I am doing.” You will. So does everyone in their first few classes. The difference at 2nd Gear is that nobody in the room is going to make you feel bad about it. The coaches have seen it a thousand times and they know exactly how to move you through it.
“I am worried I will not be able to keep up.” Muay Thai is not a race. The class is not built around the fastest or most experienced person in the room. You work at the level you are at and you improve from there. That is the whole point.
What the Muay Thai Program Covers
Muay Thai is called the art of eight limbs for a reason. Fists, elbows, knees, and kicks all work together in a complete striking system. The program at 2nd Gear teaches each element in a progression that builds real skill over time.
Striking Fundamentals Stance, guard, punching mechanics, kicking technique, and how to put combinations together with intention rather than just throwing strikes and hoping.
Clinch Work The clinch is what separates Muay Thai from every other striking art. You learn how to control, position, and strike from close range in a way that changes how you understand the entire game.
Pad Work and Timing Hitting pads with a trained partner is where technique becomes instinct. You develop timing, power, and accuracy in a setting that is controlled enough to learn but real enough to matter.
Footwork and Movement How you move is as important as how you strike. The program builds footwork into every class because technique without movement is only half the picture.
Conditioning Through Training You will get fit. Not because there is a separate cardio section bolted onto the end of class, but because Muay Thai itself demands conditioning and you build it naturally through consistent training.
What You Need for Your First Class
Not much.
Wear comfortable athletic clothes you can move in. Bring a water bottle. That is the whole list.
You do not need gloves, hand wraps, or any gear for your first visit. If you decide to keep training, we will point you in the right direction on equipment. For now, just show up.
The Only Way to Know Is to Come In.
You can read everything on this page and still not know if Muay Thai at 2nd Gear is right for you. That is just the truth.
What will tell you is one class.
Your first week is free. No sales pitch when you walk in. No pressure to commit before you are ready. You come in, you train, and you decide for yourself.
Most people who try it come back.
But you will not know that until you show up.
