Frequently Asked Questions
Questions people ask before their first class.
If something is holding you back, it is probably answered below.
General Questions
The most common questions before anyone starts.
Do I need experience?
No. Starting from zero is not a problem. You have no bad habits to fix. Most of the people training right now walked in exactly where you are.
Am I too old?
We have people who started in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. One member walked in at 53, called himself clumsy, and earned a rank 17 months later. The question is not whether you are too old. It is whether you are going to keep thinking about it or actually try it.
Do I need to be in shape first?
No. That is like saying you need to know how to swim before your first swimming lesson. Training is how you get in shape. You come in, you move, you learn something, and you leave a little better than when you walked in.
What should I wear to my first class?
A t-shirt and athletic shorts. If you are trying Jiu Jitsu we have uniforms you can borrow so you do not need to buy anything. Once you decide to keep going we will walk you through what to get and where.
What if I try it and do not like it?
Then you tried something new and it was not for you. No hard feelings, no pressure, no follow-up sales calls. But in our experience, the people who ask this question are usually the ones who come back.
Adult Jiu Jitsu
Questions specific to the BJJ program.
Am I too old for Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is one of the few sports where the more you know, the less your age matters. You get better at reading situations faster than a younger person gets stronger. We have seen it happen over and over.
Is Jiu Jitsu safe for beginners?
Yes. Beginners work with partners who have been shown how to train with beginners. The pace is slow at first. You are learning positions and movements, not being thrown into full-speed practice. Nobody here is trying to prove something at your expense.
What if I feel awkward?
You will feel awkward. The first class is a lot of new information in a new place with new people. That is normal and it does not last long. What usually happens is you leave the first class thinking about it on the drive home. You come back because you want to figure something out. Somewhere in the first few weeks the awkward part fades and the interesting part takes over. Most people say it passed faster than they expected.
What happens in a typical class?
You start with a warmup to get moving. Then the coach teaches a move, breaks it down step by step, and explains why it works. After that you practice it with a partner. By the end of class you have learned something real and used it. You will not be standing there wondering what to do.
Adult Muay Thai
Questions specific to the Muay Thai program.
Do I need experience to start Muay Thai?
None at all. Most people who walk into their first Muay Thai class have never thrown a real punch in their life. That is fine. We start with stance and movement. Everything else gets built on top of that.
Will I be sparring right away?
No. Your first classes are about hitting the pads, moving, and learning technique. Working with a partner at full speed is something you build toward when you are ready. Nobody is going to push you there before you are.
Is Muay Thai too intense for beginners?
The hard work comes from your own effort. Not from being pushed into something you are not ready for. Your first classes will feel like a workout and like learning at the same time. That is what makes it different from a regular gym.
What if I have never hit pads before?
Good. That means you have not picked up anyone else’s bad habits. You will learn how to hold the pads and how to put moves together from the very first class. Everything is taught. Nothing is assumed.
What kind of workout is it?
Probably the hardest workout you have had in a while. You are on your feet the whole time. Moving, hitting, thinking, and reacting. Your heart, your muscles, and your brain all get worked in one class. Most people are surprised by how hard they are breathing and how fast the hour goes.
First Week Free
You do not need to feel ready. You just need to show up once.
Everything after that takes care of itself.
Kids Jiu Jitsu
Questions from parents about the kids BJJ program.
Does my child need experience?
Every kid in the program started without experience. Your child will not be the only one who does not know what they are doing. They will be in a room full of kids in exactly the same position.
Is it safe?
Yes. Kids are taught how to move safely before they ever work with a partner. The coaches control the pace of every drill. Kids are matched by size and experience level. Safety is not a value we list. It is the first thing coached in every class.
What if my child is shy?
Most shy kids are completely different by week three. There is always something specific to do, so nobody stands around feeling lost. Coaches bring quieter kids in without calling attention to them. Some of the most confident kids in the room were the ones who would not look up on day one.
What will my child learn?
The short answer is focus, self-control, and confidence. In practice, they learn how to stay calm when something is hard. How to try, fail, and try again without giving up. How to respect the people around them without being told to. Parents notice it at home before they see it in class.
What happens in a class?
Class starts with warmups that get kids moving and focused. Then the coach teaches a move, shows it step by step, and has the kids practice it with a partner. The whole class moves together. By the end your child has learned something real, used up some energy, and had fun.
Kids Muay Thai
Questions from parents about the kids Muay Thai program.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes. Kids Muay Thai at this level is about movement and learning, not hitting each other. They learn how to throw a good strike, how to move their feet, and how to control their body. They hit pads with a coach watching and learn how to do it the right way.
Does my child need experience?
No experience needed and none expected. We have never had a parent regret starting their child without experience. We have had parents regret waiting.
Is this too aggressive for kids?
This is a fair question and the honest answer is no. What kids learn here is control, not aggression. Kids who train martial arts tend to be calmer outside of class, not more wound up. They have a place to put their energy and they know how to use it. No chaos. No showing off. Just training with clear rules.
What will my child learn?
They will learn to throw strikes the right way and move with purpose. They will learn to stay focused for a full hour. The body control that builds in Muay Thai shows up in every other sport. Parents with kids in other activities often notice it there first.
What should my child wear?
A t-shirt and athletic shorts. That is all they need for the first class. Once they decide they want to stick with it, we will tell you exactly what to get and where to find it. Nothing needs to be bought before they try it.
