Why Parents Choose 2nd Gear

Most parents who bring their child here are not looking for another activity to fill the schedule.

They are looking for something that builds qualities that do not show up on a report card. The ability to stay focused when something is hard. The confidence that comes from earning something. The self-control to stay calm when they are frustrated. The ability to try again after they fail.

Those qualities are not talked about here. They are trained into every class.

Kids learning Jiu Jitsu in class

One parent visited three gyms before enrolling their child at 2nd Gear. They told us what made the decision. At each other gym they watched how the coach reacted when a child struggled. At 2nd Gear the coach stopped, got down to the child’s level, and showed them again.

That is not an exception at 2nd Gear. That is the standard.

★★★★★
"I am so blessed for my boys to be part of this community. Coach Ken deserves the word coach and I feel safe with my boys looking up to him as a role model. In 2nd Gear all relationships and feelings are original, true, and honest."

What Parents Notice

The physical side happens naturally.

Stronger, moving better, more sure of their body. What parents do not expect is everything else.

  • Handles frustration differently. Tries things they are not good at without falling apart.
  • Listens better. Carries themselves differently. Shows up at school and at home.
  • Starts to take responsibility for getting better, instead of waiting for someone to push them.
  • Self-control under pressure. The ability to reset instead of react.

Choose a Program

Three programs. One standard.

AGES 5–7

Kids Jiu Jitsu

At this age the goal is building the habits that make everything else possible. Listening, focus, working with a partner, moving with intention. Progress looks like a child who tries again when something does not work.

AGES 8–12

Kids Jiu Jitsu

Older kids are ready to be pushed. They learn to work through hard things and build good habits. They start taking charge of their own getting better. Jiu Jitsu at this age builds something real.

AGES 7–13

Kids Muay Thai

How to punch, kick, and move with control. All training is watched closely and right for each age group. Children who train Muay Thai move differently. They stand differently. They know something about themselves they did not know before.

★★★★★
"The one hour classes are always one hour, starting on time, ending on time. That to me is a sign of respect. The coaches are tough yet caring. Both students and parents feel a sense of belonging."

First Class

Your child needs nothing for their first class. Just comfortable clothes they can move in.

A coach will meet your child when they arrive. They will know what to expect before they step on the mat. No child is pushed into anything before they are ready.

Parents are welcome to watch. Most do for the first few classes. You will see how the coaches work and what your child walks into every time they train.

Children are corrected without being embarrassed. Pushed without being broken down. Held to a standard without being made to feel bad.

Every coach who works with kids here is patient by design, not by accident.

Common Questions

Before you come in.

Is this safe for my child?
Yes. Every class is watched closely and right for the age group. No child works with a partner in a physical way before they are ready. The program does not allow rough or aggressive behavior between students.
What if my child is shy or anxious?
We have worked with shy kids and nervous kids. Kids who sat on the side for their first few classes before jumping in and never looking back. No child is called out or pushed to join before they feel ready.
How much does membership cost?
Membership starts at $189 per month with a month-to-month option, or a lower rate on a one-year commitment. Your child’s first week is completely free. No commitment required before you decide.
