Most parents who bring their child to 2nd Gear are not looking for another activity to fill the schedule.

They are looking for something that builds the kind of qualities that do not show up on a report card but matter just as much. The ability to stay focused when something is hard. The confidence that comes from earning something, not being handed it. The self control to stay calm when they are frustrated. The resilience to try again after they fail.

Those qualities are not talked about here. They are trained into every class.

One parent visited three gyms before enrolling their child at 2nd Gear. They told us what made the decision.

At other gyms they watched how coaches reacted when kids struggled or made mistakes. Some yelled. Some ignored. At 2nd Gear the coach stopped, got down to the child’s level, and showed them again.

That is not an exception at 2nd Gear. That is the standard.

Children are corrected without being embarrassed. Encouraged without being coddled. Challenged without being overwhelmed. Every coach who works with kids here is patient by design, not by accident.

Eman Ali

“I am so blessed for my boys to be part of this community. Coach Ken deserves the word coach and I feel safe with my boys looking up to him as a role model. In 2nd Gear all relationships and feelings are original, true, and honest.”

Kids BJJ and Martial Arts
The physical side happens naturally. Stronger, more coordinated, better body awareness.

What parents do not expect is everything else.

Kids who train consistently at 2nd Gear handle frustration differently. They try things they are not good at without falling apart. They listen better. They carry themselves differently in a way that shows up at school, at home, and everywhere their parents are watching.

That is not a marketing claim. It is what parents tell us after the first few months. Almost without exception.

Kids Jiu Jitsu | Ages 5 to 7 At this age the goal is building the habits that make everything else possible. Listening, focus, working with a partner, moving with intention. Progress looks like a child who tries again when something does not work. That matters more than any technique.

Kids Jiu Jitsu | Ages 8 to 12 Older kids are ready to be challenged. They learn to solve problems under pressure, develop a work ethic, and start taking ownership of their own improvement. Jiu Jitsu at this age builds something that most activities cannot replicate.

Kids Muay Thai | Ages 7 to 13 Striking mechanics, footwork, and how to move with control and intention. All training is closely supervised and age appropriate. Children who train Muay Thai move differently. They stand differently. They know something about themselves they did not know before.

Ramsey Salim

“The one hour classes are always one hour, starting on time, ending on time. That to me is a sign of respect. The coaches are tough yet caring. Both students and parents feel a sense of belonging.”

What to Expect

Your child needs nothing for their first class. Just comfortable clothes they can move in.

A coach will greet your child when they arrive and make sure they know what to expect before they step on the mat. No child is forced into anything before they are ready.

Parents are welcome to watch. Most do during the first few classes. You will see exactly how the coaches work and exactly what your child is walking into every time they train.

Is this safe for my child? Yes. All classes are closely supervised and age appropriate. No child is put into contact training before they are ready and the culture does not allow for rough or aggressive behavior between students.

What if my child is shy or anxious? We have worked with shy kids, anxious kids, and kids who sat on the side for the first few classes before jumping in and never looking back. No child is singled out or pressured to participate before they are comfortable.

How much does membership cost? Membership starts at $149 per month with a month to month option or a lower rate on a one year commitment. Your child’s first week is completely free.

Most families who come in for a trial do not need to be sold.

They see it and they decide.

Your child’s first week is free. Come in. See for yourself.
